A Table In Town
We believe the best approach to using the table as a metaphor for awareness about Poverty and The Growing Divide is to use the physical artifact of the table in a series of sculptural works that collectively relay our message. While one single work that attempts to communicate everything might be educational, it would be a sort of one liner, could seem a little “preachy”, and might not spark the kind of interest and curiosity we would ideally like to foster within the student community.
A better approach would be a series of tables each with its own subtle message that collectively educates the community. Each piece of the initial installation will be constructed by sub-groups within sophomore seminar and the BFA students from senior seminar. These tables will be dispersed, but concentrated, within the central campus so each is encountered singly but close enough to another that the connection is obvious. A single encounter might only be a curiosity but repeated encounters with other tables should make the viewer aware that there is something larger taking place.
Only after the initial installation is in place should any press or public relations be conducted. This would be done more as an explanation of what is already happening within the student community as opposed to forward notice of an upcoming public message.
There should also be a second round of tables, planed in advance and constructed by other student groups interested in participation, to be dispersed more widely around campus. With this second round of works it is hoped there will be a sense of a spreading movement, and thus encourage even more student and public participation.
The issue of sustainability could be addressed within each work as either a sole or second message. It is recommended that this issue be addressed by the choice of materials and methods used in construction. The concept of sustainability is well understood by all university students and communicating the primary messages on poverty and the growing divide should remain our clear focus.

I think that this could be used as an overall statement that one of you could read before we begin the proposal presentations. My editorial comments are: Still not sure about the Title of the overall series but I think we should all blog on that and vote on the best title. I also am not sure about the PR. process, some advanced notice might be good, however I think that this is a good place to start. Also the secondary series involving the community, not sure about that but I would like to know what you all think about that idea. Please read the statement below and then weigh-in on the blog site. I will post this statement there as well.
